Spanish is spoken in the city, albeit with a peculiar island accent that softens the pronunciation of the “zetas” and “ces”.
As an integral part of the Spanish and European territory, the legal tender is the Euro.
Currency exchange can be done, upon presentation of the passport, at exchange offices and at the airport.
VAT is not applied in the Canary Islands, so it is not possible to apply for a refund. This makes many items cheaper than in the rest of the continent, since the tax applied – the IGIC – is much lower.
The Canary Islands share the Greenwich time zone, which is the same as in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Portugal: one hour less than in the rest of Spain, Germany, France, Austria, Italy or Sweden.
The traditional business hours are mornings and afternoons. Usually, from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 20:00. Shopping centers have a continuous schedule until 22:00.
In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the climate is mild all year round. It is advisable to include in your luggage some warm clothes -a cardigan or a light jacket- for the nights, which are always cooler due to the proximity to the sea. Temperatures sometimes vary quite a lot in very few kilometers, something to take into account when leaving the city and touring the island. Sunscreen is also important.
