Between the two poles of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria – the port and the Vegueta-Triana area – are the Ciudad Jardín and Arenales neighborhoods.
Ciudad Jardín is also “the neighborhood of the English” because of the mark left by the British colony: the Anglican church, the English Club and the Metropole (today the headquarters of the Municipal Offices) and Santa Catalina hotels are part of this legacy. This residential neighborhood has, thanks to the intervention of the architect Miguel Martín-Fernández de la Torre, a remarkable example of rationalist architecture.
By the same architect, in collaboration with his brother Néstor, is the current building of the Hotel Santa Catalina and its surroundings, the Pueblo Canario and Doramas Park. A stone’s throw away is the Muelle Deportivo, the largest dock for small boats in the Canary Islands and a place for leisure and recreation.
In the Arenales neighborhood, the figure of Benito Pérez Galdós stands in the center of the Plaza de la Feria, where the Marine Command building, the first important one to be built in the neighborhood, and the Government Delegation are located. Nearby, Casa África’s headquarters hosts a wide range of activities to strengthen relations between Spain and the African continent.
