In the silhouette of the city, the Woermann tower stands out for its height -76 meters- and its architectural singularity. It is located on the isthmus that joins the beach of Las Canteras and the Port of Las Palmas, and owes its name to the German coal company that was located in the same place.
The tower is a design by the architectural firm Ábalos & Herreros, in collaboration with Joaquín Casariego and Elsa Guerra. Among its most characteristic elements is its glazed façade with a strategically organized play of colors, its glass decorated with plant motifs and the horizontal sunshades. Construction was completed in 2005. A year later, the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) included images of this innovative and avant-garde building in the exhibition On site: New Architecture in Spain.
The tower is part of an urban space that includes a public square, built with Portuguese stone by artist Albert Oehlen, and a seven-story building.
