The Vegueta Cemetery is one of the most important funerary heritage sites in the Canary Islands. Opened in 1811, the year of the yellow fever epidemic that caused a large number of deaths in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, it contains more than two centuries of history. In it lie the remains of illustrious personalities of Gran Canaria, such as Dr. Chil, Mayor López Botas, the painter Néstor Martín-Fernández de la Torre, the modernist poet Tomás Morales, the tenor Alfredo Kraus or Jerónimo Saavedra, who was minister, president of the Government of the Canary Islands and mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, this cemetery houses an outstanding architectural and sculptural legacy, a reflection of the ideology and artistic thought of renowned creators from the island and abroad.
The neoclassical façade of the cemetery is attributed to Luján Pérez, while the access portico – made of stone with an iron gate – is the work of Manuel Ponce de León. This Gran Canarian artist carried out many public and private works in the cemetery.
