Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a member of the World Surf Cities Network (WSCN). The area of La Cícer, at one end of the beach of Las Canteras, and its surroundings are points of daily practice and the area of influence of several schools, which also offer classes in modalities such as paddle surfing. The neighborhood of Guanarteme, where this stretch of the beach is located, is an enclave of surfing atmosphere, with equipment and material rental stores, restaurants and lodgings aimed at this public.
Throughout the year, Las Canteras hosts different surfing and bodyboarding events: high-level competitions in which surfers from the world circuit participate. Highlights include events such as the Open Gran Canaria Surf Fest, the ETB Gran Canaria Pro and the Gran Canaria Surf No Limit.
Surfers also come to the city attracted by the perfection of the waves of the beach of El Confital. The right side of the Confital is considered by the practitioners of this sport as one of the best waves in Europe.
Other popular spots are El Lloret, behind the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, on the beach of Las Canteras, for experts due to its swell and rocky bottom; San Cristobal and La Laja beach , on the east coast of the city, with good waves on rocky bottoms; and La Barra, on the beach of Las Canteras, only for the most advanced surfers.
