Square and hermitage of the Holy Spirit

At the junction of Castillo Street, Espíritu Santo Street and Doctor Chil Street, Plaza del Espíritu Santo invites visitors to enjoy this peaceful corner of Vegueta. At its centre stands a fountain sheltered by a stone pavilion, designed by Manuel Ponce de León in 1867, and surrounded by a landscaped area also designed by the Gran Canaria artist, featuring dragon trees, palm trees and an Araucaria.

Facing the square—once the starting point of the city’s water supply network—is the Hermitage of Espíritu Santo. Built in 1615, its artistic and religious heritage includes the sculptural group of the Holy Trinity, which stands out among its most notable works.

The stately buildings surrounding the square reflect the prosperity and progress experienced by the city in the mid-19th century. Among them is the Edificio Cultural Ponce de León of the Fundación MAPFRE Canarias, which houses an exhibition hall and hosts an extensive cultural and educational programme.
