Teatro Pérez Galdós is a landmark of the city’s cultural life. It opened its doors on 6 December 1890 as Teatro Tirso de Molina, and since then its stage has been graced by some of the most important national and international artists and companies. The theatre hosts music, theatre and dance performances, as well as the Las Palmas opera season.
Comprising a historic building and a modern extension, the current Teatro Pérez Galdós represents a synthesis of the three main stages in its history: the original project by Francisco Jareño y Alarcón; the reconstruction following the fire it suffered in 1918, in which Fernando Navarro, Rafael Massanet and Isidro Puig took part, with a particularly significant contribution from architect Miguel Martín-Fernández de la Torre and his brother, the artist Néstor; and the renovation and expansion carried out between 2004 and 2007 by Marcos Roger, Carlos Díaz and Agustín Juárez.
The intervention by Miguel and Néstor turned the Teatro Pérez Galdós into a true museum: carpentry elements with Art Nouveau details, lamps, the large mirror facing the staircase, turned fruit bowls and pinnacles matching the balustrade. Néstor is also responsible for the paintings in the Salón Saint-Saëns—a space of great artistic value—as well as those on the auditorium ceiling and the proscenium arch, in addition to the designs for the stained-glass windows and the curtain.
Outside the building, a sculpture of Benito Pérez Galdós by Manuel Bethencourt, replicating the original by Victorio Macho housed at the Casa-Museo Pérez Galdós, pays tribute to the writer whose name the theatre has borne since 1902.
