Benito Pérez Galdós, one of the great authors of world literature, was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1843 in a house located on Calle Cano, in the Triana district. This late 18th-century building is home to the Casa-Museo Pérez Galdós, an institution dedicated to preserving, studying and disseminating his legacy.
The building is a unique example of traditional urban architecture in the area. It preserves the original layout of the house, its inner courtyards and the stone kitchen, complete with a wood-fired hearth, traditional pottery and popular tableware.
The Casa-Museo Pérez Galdós safeguards important collections and legacies, including those acquired from the writer’s daughter, María Pérez Galdós Cobián, and her heirs. These include paintings, drawings, furniture and personal belongings of the author. The museum also houses the portrait of Galdós painted by Sorolla in 1894.
The institution also occupies a second house on Calle Cano, in whose courtyard visitors can see the sculpture of Benito Pérez Galdós by Victorio Macho, which was formerly located at the old pier of Las Palmas.
