This Modernist-style mansion, located between Pérez Galdós Street and Perdomo Street, is a vibrant hub of the city’s cultural life, offering a permanent programme open to the public. It serves as the headquarters of the Sociedad Municipal de Promoción, the body responsible for managing the areas of culture and carnival for the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The mansion, built in the early years of the 20th century, was a gift from the merchant Domingo Rodríguez Quegles to his future wife, Teresa González, who lived next door, on the site now occupied by the Franciscan Church. The project was designed by Madrid-based architect Mariano Belmás, with the collaboration of the Gran Canaria architect Fernando Navarro.
The building functioned as a private residence until 1972, when it was acquired by the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Since then, it has housed the Conservatorio Superior de Música, the Regional Ministry of Education and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, and the Academia Canaria de la Lengua. In 2015, the City Council transformed it into a centre dedicated to cultural exhibition, creation and coordination.
