Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival

Singular, independent and fresh. This is what the International Film Festival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is like, which is held every April in different venues in the capital of Gran Canaria.

An event that in its early years welcomed stars such as Sophia Loren, Faye Dunaway, Susan Sarandon, Catherine Deneuve, Ed Harris, Alain Delon or Gerard Depardieu (some even left their mark at the foot of the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium), and that, after 25 editions, today has other stars: creators of innovative products, outside the more commercial circuits.

Many of them have taken their first steps here before triumphing and even achieving recognition at the most prestigious festivals. This is the case of directors such as Asghar Farhadi, Brillante Mendoza, Jia Zhangke, Joel Coen, Kim Ki-duk, Gan Bi, Guy Maddin or Rita Azevedo Gomes.

The Night + Freak, with long night sessions dedicated to fantastic and horror films; the Camera Obscura cycle, with silent films accompanied by live music; the creations of Canarian filmmakers, the cycles and parallel activities around the seventh art make this festival a great opportunity to enjoy cinema on the big screen.

The prizes awarded by the festival are reproductions of the Lady Harimaguada, the sculpture by Martín Chirino that welcomes visitors to the city through its southern entrance.
