Elder Museum of Science and Technology

The former offices of the British shipping company Elder Dempster Lines Ltd.—established in Gran Canaria in 1884—now house the Museo Elder de la Ciencia y la Tecnología, a space designed to experience science up close and to make it accessible, engaging and enjoyable for all audiences. Its facilities bring together a wide range of disciplines, including mathematics, physics, biology, computing, engineering and art.

Spread over four floors, the museum features exhibition galleries with interactive pieces and modules, as well as a 3D cinema, a planetarium, an area dedicated to Canary Islands cetaceans, and simulators. It also includes spaces for workshops, round tables and conferences.

The Museo Elder is located in one of the city’s most popular areas, in Santa Catalina Park, very close to the cruise terminal of the Port of Las Palmas and also to Las Canteras Beach.

The building that houses the museum, the Elder, emerged—like the neighbouring Miller building—as a result of the growth in maritime traffic experienced by the port from the late 18th century onwards. It also stands as a testament to the significant British presence on the island and the lasting mark it has left.
