The Rascacio, a silvery sculpture crowning the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium like a weather vane, is one of the elements of the artistic intervention carried out by the Gran Canarian artist Juan Bordes to transform the building into an “inhabited rock” populated by the marine fauna of Las Canteras Beach.
Each façade features sculptures that engage in dialogue with the surrounding environment: a caboso, a common inhabitant of Los Charcos de Las Canteras, at the top of the main staircase; a jellyfish above the large window overlooking the Symphonic Hall; a seashell and a ray on one of the terraces; and an octopus climbing beside a gargoyle.
Inside, marine shells, moray eels, crabs, schools of small fish and a giant mussel emerging from the Rose of the Winds complete this underwater world.
Juan Bordes’s sculptures deepen the integration with the landscape already envisioned by the architect Óscar Tusquets in his conception of the building, which houses one of the city’s most important cultural and conference venues: a fortress that protects and a lighthouse that guides, standing at one end of Las Canteras Beach.
In the surrounding gardens, a large bronze sculpture by the architect Víctor Ochoa pays tribute to the Gran Canarian tenor Alfredo Kraus.
