The Plaza de España is located in the center of Mesa y López Avenue, in the commercial area par excellence -together with Triana- of the city. It is a green and pedestrian space of 5,000 square meters surrounded by terraces, bars and cafes and connected to the pedestrian promenade of Mesa y López.
In the interior of the square rises the sculptural group Monument to the primitive canary activities, work of the artist Luis Alemán Montull, formed by four sculptures of 14 meters of height. Made between 1975 and 1977, it was designed to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the founding of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The square, formerly a traffic circle for traffic and transformed into a space for the enjoyment of citizens, hosts every other Saturday performances of folklore groups and workshops of traditional games. It is also the place to celebrate sporting triumphs, especially those of Unión Deportiva Las Palmas.
