New Pilar Square

Located behind the Cathedral of Santa Ana, this square was a meeting point for women who came to collect water from the Pilar Nuevo, one of the first sources of drinking water supply in the city. It is surrounded by buildings from different periods and architectural styles. Among them, the green façade of the Casa de Colón stands out.

On Sundays, the Plaza del Pilar Nuevo hosts the Vegueta Crafts and Culture Market, with folkloric performances and children’s entertainment.

From this corner starts, on the way to the sea, Los Balcones Street, a cobblestone pedestrian street where stately buildings stand: Casa Mendoza, Casa Velázquez or Casa del Marqués de Acialcázar are some examples of traditional buildings, ranging from the neoclassical style to the new Canarian style. The Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno (CAAM) is located on this street.
