Vegueta Market

Fresh, local produce is the hallmark of Mercado de Vegueta, the oldest food market in the Canary Islands. Located next to the mouth of the Guiniguada ravine, opposite Teatro Pérez Galdós, the building was constructed in 1858 on the site that had functioned as an open-air market since 1787. It was designed by architect Manuel de Oraá, based on an original idea by artist Manuel Ponce de León.

Its stalls offer a wide variety of locally sourced products, alongside food establishments—where visitors can enjoy anything from churros for breakfast to wines and cheeses from the islands—and traditional shops such as a barbershop, a cobbler and clothing repair services, located both inside and around the exterior of the building.

Mercado de Vegueta and its surroundings have always been among the most characteristic and popular areas of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. In the pedestrian streets that radiate from the market, from Mendizábal to La Pelota, traditional shops have gradually given way to restaurants and eateries, revitalising the area and turning it into one of the city’s main leisure hubs.
