Juan Negrín Foundation

The Fundación Juan Negrín is dedicated to the study and dissemination of the life and work of Juan Negrín López, a distinguished physician and physiologist, as well as a politician and the last President of the Second Spanish Republic. Negrín was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1889 and died in exile in Paris in 1956.

The institution is the custodian of his valuable archive, comprising more than 150,000 public and private documents that span from his time as minister and head of government during the final years of the Spanish Civil War to his later activity in exile. The archive was safeguarded in France by Negrín himself and returned to Spain in 2013 thanks to the joint efforts of his family, the Fundación Juan Negrín and the Cabildo de Gran Canaria. It is regarded as a fundamental resource for understanding key events in 20th-century Spanish and European history.

Located in the Vegueta district, the Fundación Juan Negrín offers a permanent exhibition open to the public.
