The figure of Benito Pérez Galdós is present in different corners of the city. And the characters that inhabit his books give their names to many of the streets of the Schamann neighborhood, in Ciudad Alta.
Walking through it is a way to remember Doña Perfecta, Marianela, Pedro Infinito or Fortunata, and to bring novels such as Misericordia or Zaragoza to the present. In the Plaza de Don Benito you can share a bench with a sculpture of the novelist, the work of Ana Luisa Benítez. To complete the Galdós City Route, eight murals located on the facades of some buildings extol the figure of the Gran Canarian writer.
In total, 51 streets, three squares and a traffic circle in this neighborhood are named after characters and works by Benito Pérez Galdós, an initiative promoted by the poet Saulo Torón.
Schamann is a popular and commercial neighborhood where the traditional business model survives, with small stores and personalized service. It owes its name to Alfredo Schamann, the first owner of the lots where it was built from 1930. In 1959, the construction of the Nuestra Señora de los Dolores church (the work of the Catalan architect Joan Margarit) initiated the expansion of the neighborhood. Its tower, 33 meters high, stands apart from the main church building.
