The port, the streets and squares, the buildings, the shops, the surnames of certain families—and the British Club of Gran Canaria, founded in 1908 as a social club—bear witness to the deep imprint and legacy left by the British in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Today, following British customs and traditions, bridge is still played at the club and Saint George’s Day continues to be celebrated.
Initially open to both British nationals and people of other nationalities, and under the presidency of Peter Swanston—whose company built Puerto de La Luz—the club’s first headquarters was the Rayo Hotel, near Santa Catalina Park. In 1912, it moved to the Brown House, next to the Metropole Hotel (now the headquarters of the municipal offices), where the English Club is currently located. From there, it welcomes its members and also offers activities and services open to the general public.
Among the notable figures who visited the English Club in its early years were the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth), the writer Agatha Christie, the aviator Charles Lindbergh, and the soprano Eva Turner.
