The Mercado Central, located in the Mesa y López commercial area, is one of the city’s main food markets. Its shops are distributed over two floors: the ground floor houses the traditional stalls, where visitors can purchase fresh, locally sourced products, as well as a small shopping gallery, while a supermarket occupies the upper floor.
The market also features several venues where visitors can enjoy a coffee, churros, or even lunch or dinner within the market itself.
It was built in 1958 to serve the growing population of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, at a time when the city was experiencing significant urban development. The Mercado Central was conceived not only to supply the neighbourhood, but also as a distribution centre.
The building’s structure was designed by the Catalan architect Joan Margarit. Notable features include the entrance arch, the façade mural created by the Gran Canaria artist Pepe Dámaso, and the abundant natural light that fills the interior.
