In San Cristóbal, the southern gateway to the city, the sea is present at every step, and seafaring tradition and culture remain very much alive.
This fishermen’s neighbourhood is made up of a cluster of houses located just a few metres from where the waves break, a promenade, a fishing pier and a small beach, La Puntilla. It also offers a wide selection of restaurants specialising in fresh fish.
San Cristóbal is connected to the rest of the city via Avenida Marítima, allowing visitors to reach the area on foot or by bicycle.
This area was once a strategic defensive point, of which the Torre de San Pedro—declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1922—remains. Popularly known as the Castillo de San Cristóbal, this fortress was built over the sea in 1577 and rebuilt in 1638 to protect and monitor this entrance to the city. It retained military use until the 19th century.
