Teatro Guiniguada, located in Vegueta in a landmark building of the city’s heritage, is a multidisciplinary venue for the performing arts. Its programme includes music, theatre and dance, with a particular focus on cinema: it hosts the Filmoteca Canaria programme, premieres by Canarian filmmakers, festivals and other events related to the seventh art.
The venue opened its doors in July 1946 as Cine Avellaneda, in a distinctive six-storey building designed by architect Antonio Cardona Aragón, which also houses residential units, commercial premises and offices. Although it was conceived as a cinema, its design followed the model of a traditional theatre, featuring a triangular auditorium, boxes, a stage and an orchestra pit, to which a screen was added at the back of the stage and a projection booth above the balcony.
For forty years, Cine Avellaneda was a leading leisure venue. After its closure in 1986, it was acquired by the Government of the Canary Islands and transformed into Teatro Guiniguada. Following several refurbishments, it reopened in 2011, restoring its prominent role in the cultural life of the city.
