Cuyás Theater

Located in the very heart of the Triana district, Teatro Cuyás presents each season some of the most outstanding titles on the national and international performing arts scene, as well as productions by Canarian companies.

The building that has housed the theatre since 1999 is one of the city’s oldest cultural venues, together with Teatro Pérez Galdós. It was inaugurated in 1898 as Teatro Circo Cuyás, and since then has served as a venue for variety shows, circus performances, cockfighting, cinema and theatre.

In 1933, the original building gave way to Cine Cuyás, which for fifty years was a landmark cinema in the city. The project, designed by architect Miguel Martín-Fernández de la Torre, is considered one of the finest examples of the island’s rationalist architectural school.

The Cabildo acquired the building in 1989 in order to restore it and transform it into a modern performance theatre.
