Las Canteras is a natural space in the heart of the city, bursting with life both in the water and on the sand, as well as along the pedestrian promenade that runs alongside its three kilometres of coastline. It is considered one of the best urban beaches in Europe and has received several national and international awards, including the Q for Tourism Quality.
The beach stretches from the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, in the Guanarteme district, to La Puntilla, in La Isleta. Along its length, several distinct areas can be found, each with its own character: La Cícer, a surfer’s paradise; Peña la Vieja; Playa Chica and Muro Marrero, the most family-friendly area; Playa Grande, the most popular with tourists; and La Puntilla, the last stronghold of traditional fishermen. At both ends of the beach there are sports areas and children’s playgrounds.
Its calm waters are thanks to La Barra, a calcareous reef over 100,000 years old that runs parallel to more than half of the beach and acts as a natural breakwater. This reef is home to a unique ecosystem, with different habitats and a rich variety of endemic marine flora and fauna.
Las Canteras is a beach to be enjoyed seven days a week, at any time of day or night. A beach for swimming, strolling along the sand or the promenade, practising sport, or enjoying time with the little ones. And also for enjoying an ice cream or sitting down at one of the many restaurants and leisure venues spread along the promenade, offering a wide range of cuisine that can be enjoyed from sunrise to well beyond sunset.
From this point, on most days, the neighbouring island of Tenerife and the peak of Mount Teide can be seen.
