La Laja is a beach of fine black sand located at the southern entrance to the city, facing the open sea. A submerged breakwater prevents the waves from breaking on the shore and ensures calm conditions for bathers; however, strong currents mean that extra caution is required for those who venture into the sea.
The surrounding area features three natural swimming pools: a crescent-shaped children’s pool, a 50-metre pool adapted for regulated sports, and a family pool. A birdwatching viewpoint, shaded areas and spaces for sunbathing complete the beach’s facilities. Facing east, the beach offers outstanding sunrises.
La Laja beach can be reached on foot from Avenida Marítima via a pedestrian walkway. For those arriving by car from the south, a sculpture of the god Triton, created by Manolo González, welcomes visitors to this spot.
Of the former houses of La Laja, once located beside the coastal road at the edge of the beach, the Torre del Viento remains as a testament to its past as a summer retreat for families and a leisure area for residents of nearby neighbourhoods.
